In today's rapidly evolving educational landscape, the integration of technology has become imperative for institutions to deliver effective online and hybrid pedagogy. Drawing from previous experiences in various projects and collaborations, the SOULSS consortium decided to create an educational platform that could serve as a showcase of effective technologies, benefiting higher education teachers, decision-makers, and learners alike.

However, SOULSS is more than just a learning management system; it's a comprehensive platform designed to showcase technologies for effective online and hybrid pedagogy in higher education. It also provides a common platform for piloting new approaches and demonstrating best practices in educational technology.

The SOULSS platform, built on Moodle learning management system, offers a wide range of enhanced features, including but not limited to Learning Analytics, microcredentials, and seamless integration with existing university systems (as well as registration via social media). The platform was specifically tailored to meet the needs of higher education teachers identified through the survey conducted at the beginning of the SOULSS project. To facilitate adoption of SOULSS, comprehensive guidelines will be created to ensure a smooth transition and optimal utilisation. Additionally, less experienced users will be able to take part in a short online “Get started” course.

Several factors ensure the high quality of the overall project outcome:

  • User satisfaction measurements: regular surveys and feedback mechanisms to assess and improve user experience.
  • Open-Source Software: utilising open-source tools to enhance flexibility and innovation.
  • Cross-institutional validation and testing protocol: rigorous testing across different institutions to ensure robustness and reliability.
  • Stability and reliability: Monitored through quantitative measures such as Mean Time to Address Bugs, Improve, Patch Vulnerabilities, Incidents of Unauthorised Access, and Unexpected Downtimes.
  • Data protection regulations: Adhering to GDPR to safeguard user privacy and data security.

In conclusion, SOULSS is not just a platform; it's a catalyst for transformation in higher education pedagogy. By showcasing innovative technologies, providing enhanced features, and offering comprehensive guidelines, SOULSS empowers educators, institutions, and learners to thrive in the digital age of education.
